Behind every innovation lies a story of personal challenge, and for Lars E. Foss, a retired entrepreneur and civil engineer, the quest for the perfect night’s sleep was no different. Battling light sleep, occasional insomnia, and discomfort from muscle stiffness, Lars sought not just any solution, but one that could adapt to the ever-changing Nordic seasons and his global travels.

Lars's journey to solve his sleep dilemmas led him to an unexpected discovery. While creating high-quality artificial snow for the entertainment and advertising industries, he observed younger crew members enjoying power naps on bags of artificial snowflakes. Inspired, he filled an old pillowcase with the snowflakes and experienced his first night of truly restorative sleep. This was the birth of Nordic Sleep: comfortable, fresh, clean, and perfectly tempered for all seasons.

At 69, Lars innovated his unique filling material. These snowflakes not only trapped air for warmth but also allowed for the escape of heat and moisture, ensuring soft yet supportive comfort that encourages muscle relaxation—a solution that embodied the essence of Nordic simplicity and comfort.

After refining the flakes and experimenting with blends for varying softness, Lars introduced his invention to the American hospitality industry, receiving spontaneous acclaim that opened doors to the retail market.

Adam Foss, inheriting his father's light sleeping trait, took the helm in 2005, further refining and expanding the product range in collaboration with physiotherapists, chiropractors, and sleep experts. This led to the creation of high-quality support pillows and a broader range of products under the Fossflakes name, celebrating Scandinavian design, quality, and craftsmanship.

Today, Fossflakes is a revered Nordic brand, offering four product ranges: SLEEP (pillows and duvets), FAMILY (baby and junior products), HEALTHCARE (support pillows), and FOSSTARS (covers). All products, certified to the highest OEKO-TEX® 100 standard, are crafted in our state-of-the-art facility in Skive, Denmark, and cherished in over 20 countries worldwide.
